I’m not very funny in my writing, but I’m honest. Crafting airy, clever witticisms here to prove how fun and smart I am is not my thing. Family is. Chocolate is. So is the environment. I like green things, and glitter, leaves, and trees.
I wrote my first poem when I was a kid, but not because it was a school assignment. I began writing a book when I was 14, although the only thing I knew about doing it was that I wanted to (and I never did finish it). As an adult, I worked for years as a freelance writer and reporter; I was published outside my day job, too.
When I’m not writing, I might be foraging and/or praying and/or working on being more present (and getting better at it). I also spend most of my not-writing time advocating for children’s brain health.
I’d like to thank comedian Fred Allen for expressing exactly how I feel about people: “A human being is nothing but a story with skin around it.”
“Nothing but” indeed.
