Resources for Emerging Writers

Wanting to write, and knowing how to go about it, are two different things. Here are some of the resources that have helped me:

Writer in Residence programs provide the opportunity for writers to tap into the experience and knowledge of professional writers for FREE. Want someone to critique your work? Or discuss self-publishing versus traditional publishing? Or read your query letter for you? Or help you figure out why you might seek a literary agent? Or tell you what a literary agent IS? Then check out these programs in the Edmonton area:

Metro Writer in Residence

Edmonton Public Library Writer in Residence

MacEwan University Writer in Residence

University of Alberta Writer in Residence

Canadian Authors’ Association

The Writers’ Guild of Alberta has also been an invaluable way for me to connect with other writers and learning opportunities. (The annual membership fee is worth it.)

Finding a writing group has also been a huge benefit for me. Among other things, it has kept me motivated, given me the opportunity to encourage other writers, and given me access to peer-reviews. You can find the Morinville Word Docs on Facebook.

Third Verb is run by two local authors and offers workshops in Edmonton on a variety of topics, from writing flash fiction, to narrative journalism, to magazine pitching. I have attended a few of these and each one has been helpful.

And, you can always shoot me an e-mail via my contact page with any questions you have about how to begin and I’ll do my best to help you.
